Setting materials are important and you should consult a qualified tile installer to choose the right one.   Top brands like Ardex, Mapei, Laticrete are preferred by many tile installers all over the country.

Why is it important to have a good tile setting material. Thin-set is an organic material and has a certain shelf life. In addition, raw materials used in manufacturing thin-set must be well refined and consistent. Poor raw material in a thin-set can affect your installation. For example, iron or rust in it can seep to the surface after your tile is installed.

Grout is another category of something simple but can make or break a great tile installation.   Good grout needs to be within its shelflife. You should also determine your grout joint size, and type of grout. There is unsanded grout for small joints and glass and ceramic tiles.  We recommend using sanded grout for tumbled stone, or french travertine patterns.  Sand in grout will provide a better bond for large joints.
