Where two floors meet
A threshold has one job: to span the opening where two floors meet and to take the wear of everyone crossing it. This one is cut from Jerusalem Light limestone and honed to a matte face, 4 inches wide by 36 long and 3/4 thick. It is sold by the piece and trimmed on site, so a single length covers a standard door opening with stone to spare.
Design
Fine grain, eased edges
The stone is a quiet beige with the even grain limestone is known for, and a fossil trace turns up here and there when you look closely. Both long edges are bevelled, so the step between tile and wood or carpet is eased instead of squared off. Variation is moderate, which means a second piece from the same order will be close but not identical.
Bevelled long edges
The eased edge takes the trip out of a height change and wears better than a sharp arris.
Honed face
A matte surface hides the scuffs a doorway collects far better than a polished one.
Where to use it
Cut to the opening
Thresholds are sold by the piece and trimmed on site with a wet saw. Measure jamb to jamb rather than across the finished floor, and keep the factory bevel on the long edges by cutting only the ends. Set the piece in thin-set on a flat bed, then finish each side with a flexible joint instead of hard grout so the two floors can move without cracking the stone. The same limestone runs through the rest of the range as 18x18 tiles and waterjet mosaics, with Andorra 2x12 and Pencil Liner 1/2x12 trims when a niche or a wall edge needs finishing.
One piece per opening
The 36 inch length covers standard door widths; a wider opening needs a joint or a longer piece.
Soft joint at the sides
Flexible sealant where the threshold meets each floor absorbs movement that grout would not.

Care
Seal limestone after installation and again every one to two years, sooner in a bathroom doorway that sees water and grit. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and keep acidic products off it.
