Arabesque with a fine texture

Emperador Light Arabesque is a marble waterjet mosaic on a 6 by 8 1/4 sheet, cut to interlocking curves and finished with a fine texture rather than a polish. Six sheets to a box, 1.83 square feet, each sheet covering 0.31.

Design

Curves without shine

An arabesque outline interlocks along curved edges, so the sheets join without a straight grid appearing between them. Choosing a fine textured finish over a polished one keeps a brown marble from looking lacquered and hides the small marks that polish would show. Variation is moderate, so tone moves across an area, as it does with most marble waterjet mosaics cut from a natural block. Sheets are 3/8 inch. A 4x36 threshold matches for a doorway. Interlocking shapes also mean the perimeter needs planning, because a cut curve is more noticeable at an edge than a cut square would be.

Interlocking curves

Sheets join along the shape rather than on a straight line.

Threshold to match

A 4x36 piece in the same stone finishes an opening.

Where to use it

Rated almost everywhere indoors

The approval list is long and covers interiors of most kinds, vertical and horizontal, domestic and commercial, wet rooms included on both walls and floors. Rooms named are living room, bathroom and kitchen. Against that breadth sits the coverage: 1.83 square feet a box means 38 boxes to fill 60 square feet, which is why this tends to be specified for a panel, a border or a niche. Full adhesive contact behind each sheet matters as much here as with any stone mosaic, since an unsupported curve is where a crack begins.

Costly to spread

Low coverage per box makes wide areas an expensive way to use it.

Open several boxes

Moderate variation spreads best when boxes are mixed during setting.

Why we chose it

  • Curves, not a gridInterlocking shapes break the rectangular rhythm of ordinary tile.
  • Marks stay hiddenA fine texture forgives what a polished brown would show.
  • Transition solvedThe matching threshold takes care of a doorway.

Care

Seal after installation and again every one to two years. Acids etch marble whatever the finish, so clean with a pH neutral stone product and avoid vinegar, citrus, bleach and abrasive pads.
