Marble · Tiles
Alpina White is a white marble with very little movement, cut here into a small subway at 2 3/4x5 1/2 inches. The face is honed to a matte finish and the edges are bevelled, which gives every tile a shadow line once it is set. It is rated for shower walls and floors, bath floors and walls, backsplashes and light interior floors. Tiles come sixty to a box, covering 6.3 square feet, and each piece is 3/8 inch thick. Keep it indoors, since this marble is not frost rated.

Design
Colour is the quiet part: near white, with faint grey where the stone shows its grain, and uniform enough that boxes can be mixed without sorting for tone. The bevel does the work. Each tile catches light along its chamfer, so a plain white wall gains a grid of soft shadows instead of reading as one flat sheet. Honed marble reflects less than polished, which keeps a bathroom from glaring under downlights. At 3/8 inch the tiles are light enough to run up a wall without a heavy substrate, and the small format turns a curve that a large tile cannot.
The chamfer catches light at every joint and makes the coursing visible even in an all white room.
Little variation between pieces, so tone stays even across a whole wall.

Where to use it
Where this size earns its place is the tight work: a niche, a curved wall, the run above a vanity, the band between two cabinets. Running bond is the default, though a stacked or vertical layout changes a room more than the tile itself does, and herringbone uses more material for the same wall. One piece covers 0.11 square feet, a box holds 60 pieces and covers 6.3 square feet, so 60 square feet with 15 percent for cuts takes 11 boxes. Marble tiles in this white are also stocked at 4 7/8x8 13/16, as polished herringbone and hexagon mosaics, and with a Pencil Liner 1/2x12 for the top edge. Dry-lay a few boxes together before setting, since even a uniform marble carries some shift between crates.
Sixty pieces per box covering 6.3 square feet. A 60 square foot wall with waste takes 11 boxes.
Running bond wastes least; herringbone and diagonal layouts need more tile for the same area.

Why we chose it
Seal after installation and again every one to two years, particularly in a shower. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, since bathroom products with acid in them will etch a honed marble face.
