Basket weave Mosaics or mosaic tiles are also known as tesserae in old Roman times and even before pre-Roman. They are small pieces of stone or glass, or other hard surface materials. These pieces are broken into tiny little chips to give a flexible material.

This material enabled artists can lay them as a historical form of art expression in old Churches and places of worship. They originated in Old Turkey, Greece, Roma, Tunisia. This creates endless colors, shapes, and forms. Of course, marble mosaic was the oldest form of this artistry.

What is the mosaic tile?

Mosaic tiles are sheets of mosaics interlocking so that any tile setters can lay them without being a mosaic artist. This is an economical way of creating endless mosaic designs. Ceramic mosaic tile and porcelain material is becoming very popular.

What is the difference between Mosaic and tile?

Mosaic is small chips of stone ( often chips are smaller than 3/8" ), and tiles are larger format square or rectangular floor and wall covering material. Mosaic tiles are often mesh-mounted or face taped.

Mesh mounted is the most usable form. This method of assembly creates easy installation and transportation. Mesh mounting is better for durability as opposed to face taped. Face taping is practical and easy. However, face taped material should be used quickly and not exposed to the sun.

For small spaces like a kitchen or bathroom, mosaic wall tiles are ideal.

What are mosaic tiles used for?

Mosaic tiles are used for any floor and wall covering materials. The most typical applications include shower floors, shower walls, countertop backsplashes, column wrappings, pool floor, and wall tiles.

Today, more industrial production of mosaic tiles include 1x1 mosaics, 2x2 squares. Also, popular formats include straight joint, staggered joint, herringbone, basketweave mosaics, and many other shapes.

Glass tiles and various colors of glass are another way of adding color. Natural stone is limited in color availability, and some of the most common and vibrant colors such as blue and green can only be done by glass tiles.

Glass tiles used in Infiniti pools and showers create unique bathroom floors and walls.

The arts and crafts industry also utilizes mosaics as craft mosaic tiles. Mosaic tile as an art form existed for centuries, and some of the older churches like Hagia Sophiahas some of the most impressive mosaics.

Installation of these tiles

Basket weave Mosaics should be dry laid so that colors are blended. Some of the mosaic factories produce them in lots, and there may be a color difference between boxes. When you mix them before installation, you will prevent lots of light or dark in different areas. After installation, you should grout them. Be sure to choose sanded or unsanded grout depending on the material. Glass tiles and porcelain tiles should be installed with unsanded grout, and natural stone should be installed with sanded grout if the joint is big. You may also pay attention to a grout release on porous materials like travertine. If there are many holes, it may not be easy to clean all the grout.
