Frequently Asked Questions

Is slate tile expensive?

Slate tile can vary in price depending on the type, size, and finish. While it is considered a premium natural stone tile, it is often more affordable compared to other high-end stones like marble or granite. At Stone Tile Depot, we offer high-quality slate tiles at competitive prices, ensuring you get the best value without compromising on quality. So, while slate may have a higher initial cost than some man-made materials, its durability and timeless beauty make it a cost-effective option in the long run.

Can slate tile get wet?

Yes, slate tile can get wet, and it's naturally resistant to water. This makes slate an ideal choice for areas that are exposed to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor spaces. Its natural water resistance helps protect against mold and mildew, and with proper sealing, slate tile can be even more resistant to water absorption, making it suitable for wet environments like shower walls and floors.

What is slate tile?

Slate tile is a type of natural stone tile made from metamorphic rock, formed by the compression of clay and volcanic ash over millions of years. Its unique composition gives slate its signature layered look, along with its natural variation in color and texture. Slate tiles are durable, water-resistant, and ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications. Their rustic appearance, combined with strength and durability, makes them a popular choice for floors, walls, patios, and more.

What happens if you don't seal slate tile?

If you don't seal slate tile, it can become more susceptible to stains, moisture absorption, and damage over time. Slate is a porous material, meaning it can absorb liquids and dirt if left unsealed, which could lead to discoloration or even cracking. Sealing slate tiles helps protect them from stains, moisture, and general wear, making them easier to clean and maintain. Failing to seal slate can reduce its lifespan and affect its natural beauty.

Slate Tile

Slate in natural cleft, honed and split face surfaces, in charcoal, gold, rust and multicolour. Sizes run 12x12 and 16x16 through 12x24 and 6x24 planks, and there are gauged pieces cut flat on the back for easier setting.

The cleft face is what slate is bought for: a layered, rippled surface with real grip. That makes it a natural fit for entries, mudrooms, covered porches and shower floors, where a smooth stone would be slick.

Slate is dense and forgiving of wet boots and dropped pans. Seal it to deepen the colour and stop the surface shedding thin flakes, and clean it with a pH neutral product rather than anything acidic.
