How to Plan a Large Tile Project and Save More This Memorial Day?

Table of Contents

Trust me, I’ve seen it all. And most of the large tile projects don’t fall apart because of a bad tile choice. They mostly fail at the planning phase because nobody sat down and did the math before the first box of tiles was ordered. If you are planning a renovation above 1,000 square feet, whether that’s a whole house interior design, an open concept living space, a commercial space design, or a hospitality project, our Memorial Day Tile Sale is the perfect opportunity to start your summer renovation. And here are the drums, this year, every order above $1,000 gets an extra 10% off on top of everything else.

What Counts as a Large Tile Project?

At Stone Tile Depot, we define a large tile project as anything above 1,000 square feet. That covers whole house tile renovations, open concept living room and kitchen tile designs, large primary bathroom suites, restaurant and retail flooring, and full showroom tile renovations. We have handled all of them. The planning process is the same whether you are a homeowner doing it once or a contractor doing it every month: measure first, decide on the natural stone tile later.

Our Tile Experts Explaining How To Run A Large Tile Project

Step 1: Calculate Your Square Footage Before You Pick a Tile

I’m putting a warning sign here because it is the most significant step you can’t avoid at all! Here is the number most people get wrong. Measure every room, add them together, and then add your “just in case” tiles on top: 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal or herringbone tile patterns. Large format tiles cut more waste at the edges compared to mosaic tiles, so budget a little higher there too.

One of the most common mistakes we see in large scale tile renovation projects is ordering by estimate rather than by measurement. Running short mid installation with a natural stone like Carrara marble is a problem that is genuinely hard to fix, because dye lots vary and a perfect match is never guaranteed. So, that’s the most frequent thing you’ll hear from our consultants: Measure twice, order once. Even the smartest move you can make is ordering free tile samples before getting your tiles!

Step 2: According To Our Tile Experts: Clients Make Those Large Tile Projects More

High Traffic Areas: Kitchen Floor Tiles, Living Rooms, and Entryways

For kitchen floor tiles, living room floors, and entryway floors, porcelain tile and marble look tile are the most requested options, especially in our commercial projects. They’re really durable and can carry all the weight of high traffic every day, low maintenance, and available in large format options that make big spaces feel cohesive. If your project includes an entryway or a foyer, a marble medallion that you can match with your porcelain tile flooring as a focal point is one of those details that elevates the entire floor plan. We get asked about them constantly in large residential projects, as well, and the result is always worth it.

Wet Areas: Bathroom, Shower, and Powder Room Tiles

Bathroom tile and shower tile decisions benefit from a layered approach: large format porcelain tile for walls, mosaic tiles for shower floors where slip resistant floor tiles matter the most, especially in houses with kids and the elderly, and something with a little more personality for a powder room tile. In those cases, porcelain mosaic tiles are the practical choice for families who want the look without the sealing chore every year.

Kitchen Walls, Backsplash and Beyond

Kitchen wall tiles are usually the last decision in a large project, and that is actually the right order; you need to see the layout, the countertops, and the stone sinks at first. Once your kitchen floor tiles and cabinet direction are set, the backsplash debates can just start, and yes, that’s the most entertaining and yummy part! Wood look tile and terrazzo look tile are the two porcelain options we are seeing most in large kitchen renovations right now. One of them brings the forest inside with biophilic design, the other puts a unique characteristic in Mid Century Modern design language. Choose your fighter!

Step 3: Not A Space To Pass: Don't Forget the Outdoor Space

Outdoor tile design is the area large project clients most frequently underestimate at the planning stage; from our experience, it’s not a place you should postpone. Porcelain pavers for patio, pool surround, or outdoor kitchen area are a natural extension of an interior renovation, and they are built for it: frost resistant, UV stable, and really low maintenance (you’ll thank me when you are able to avoid all the scrubbing phase in July).

Clients who bring their outdoor space into the same project almost always cross the $1,000 threshold without even trying, which means the extra 10% off pays for itself before they have even laid the first porcelain tile piece.

Step 4: You Need To See What You’ll Get Before Purchasing It

I have another announcement for you, and that’s one of the biggest advantages of our Memorial Day Tile Sale. You’ll get free tile samples between 14-27 May before starting your large tile project! Order free tile samples, compare them with your overall design, in the actual light, next to your actual cabinets and fixtures. We have seen clients catch mismatches at the sample stage that would have cost them thousands to fix after the fact.
